Today I will be featuring Joshua Robertson, author of Melkorka and A Midwinter Sellsword. He will be sharing a character interview with Branimir Baran from Melkorka.

Joshua began crafting the world for the dark fantasy series, Thrice Nine Legends, in 1999. Melkorka, the first book of the series, was published in 2015. The sequel, Dyndaer, will be released in January 2016. He is also the author of the Hawkhurst Saga. Joshua currently lives in Alaska with his wife and children.

Branimir Baran on Heroes: A Melkorka Character Interview

Branimir, you have spent the majority of your life as a slave under the Highborn. Did you ever have any heroes growing up?

My Lord, please, call me Bran. And yes, I suppose I looked up to the Highborn as heroes. They were very powerful with their magic. They protected the Kras.

Oh, you don’t have to call me Lord. By Kras, you mean your race?

Of course, my Lord. The Kras used to live in the mountains but they were overrun by demons. It was the Highborn that rescued us.

They enslaved you. How could you still have respect for the Highborn or call them heroes after being subjugated by them?

Um…I suppose because they were heroes, my Lord. They gave me food and a bed, and kept me alive when there was no need. Everyone on the island and even on the mainland knew their power. Even Jarls and Kings would listen when a Highborn spoke. See, no one else had the strength to fight the monsters of the Netherworld.

I said you did not have to call me Lord. Let’s change the topic for a minute. I have a note here that says that you can disappear?

I can blend in with my surroundings, if that is what you mean, my…sir.

Then why did you not just run away from the Highborn?(!)

Where would I go? The underground cities of my people had been destroyed. Most of the world does not even recognize the Kras anymore. Folks would kill me out of fear, thinking I was a demon. I am not the prettiest of creatures.

How terrible! Did the Highborn tell you that you were ugly?

[Scrunches face] I have gray eyes, crooked teeth, blood red skin, and pointy ears. You could put me in a dress and you know what would happen?

What?

Nothing. I’d just be an ugly Kras in a dress. Hehe!

[Silence…] Any other thoughts about heroes before we wrap this up?

There is nothing special about heroes, my Lord. They are just the ones that do what needs to be done when it is done. Of course, a little bit of magic always helps. [Winks]
