About the Book

Even in sparkling Jazz Age Chicago, spirits can trick you into believing they’re men.

When Susie comes to Jazz Age America, she knows her life will change. Back in China, spirits mingle in the mists of the rice fields and trick humans into believing they’re men so to steal their soul, and the expectations of a daughter are unimportant and ignore. Here in Chicago, Simon gives her the carefree life of the New American Woman, the freedom to dress daringly and do things once only reserved for men--drinking, smoking and dancing with strangers. It’s an exciting life and she considers the loyalty Simon demands of her a small price to pay.

Until she meets Blood.

Blood lets Susie speak her mind and listen to her heart. He commits himself to her and asks nothing in return. Through his eyes, Susie begins to see her loyalty to Simon as the bars around her “freedom”. But she knows Simon will never let her go.

Here in Chicago spirits can mingle in the smoke and jazz of speakeasies and trick humans into believing they’re men. They can still steal their soul. And if Susie doesn’t see the spirit behind the mask of the men fighting for her, she might lose much more than her freedom.

Susie's Bio (in her own words)

It’s the weirdest of things, thinking about that life now. It feels like a dream, a sweet dream, sometimes. But so far away that I’m not even sure it was ever my life. I know it will never be again.

I was born on the Dragon Backbone Mountains in the south of China, in what I used to think of as a village and I now would call a group of huts among the rice paddy fields. It was a beautiful place, I knew it even then. I remember the sun on the liquid terraces, the mists before the sun rose. The sweet summers. I do have many nice memories of my birthplace.

I remember running barefoot with gangs of kids, playing jokes on our elders, going hunting for rabbits and other small games. I was quite a good hunter, considering I was a little girl.

My father would always say I was a double disgrace for him. First, because I was a women, the first of five sisters. And second, because I should have been a boy as it was clear by my personality. He would always say that, before proceeding to beat some sense in that stupid head of mine.

I wonder now whether my father was a violent man. I don’t think he was. He never treated my sisters the way he treated me, but maybe my treatment was education enough for them never to do what I did: speak back, speak my mind, act like a tomboy. If this is the case, I’m happy I spared my sisters that fate. By my teen years I had learn do curb my tongue and think twice before speaking up even when the words strangled me in my throat.

I hardly remember what I felt when my father told me he had found a husband for me and I was to cross the ocean to reach him. I had always expected to leave my house, of course. And probably, back then I didn’t really know what it would mean ‘crossing the ocean’. Maybe my father saw it as the only option he had for a difficult daughter like me: selling me off to someone who couldn’t possibly check on me before marrying me. I know – because I discovered later – the man paid quite a handsome amount of money to get me, which was a huge amount of money in my little village. I’m sure my parents lived well enough after that, and my sisters found a good house to be married into. I consider that my last service to my family, because I know I will never see any of them again.

I don’t remember the journey across the ocean. I don’t want to remember. But sometimes it comes back in my worst nightmares. The dark, the choking heat, putrid food. The smell of so many bodies pressed together. The short moments of fresh air each of us where allowed.

I’m glad I don’t remember.

But I do remember when I finally landed in San Francisco, alone. It was a nightmare of its own. It was hell. Nothing was familiar. Not the language. Not the smell of the city and the people. Not the colour of the sun. Not the sounds that assailed me and confused me. I remember the inspection, and the papers handed to me which I wasn’t even sure what were for. I stood in the street with my papers in hand, staring at those incomprehensible words and thinking that was exactly what my life looked like from that standing point.

How did I find the place where my husband was waiting for me? Maybe an old couple of immigrants helped me, someone who had come before me and knew the city. Yes, it was an elderly couple who took pity on me and helped me find the house.

When I got there, finally… my soon to be husband was dead.

Was I shocked? I can’t say so. I was already overwhelmed with everything. This news was just one more brick in the wall I was banging my head against. I didn’t care. I was lost anyway. There wasn’t a place for me in this new land, I knew it from the moment I set foot on it.

But my husband had an associate, they did business together. Import/export from home, as I understood it. Ma Shu took an interest in me. He had indeed carved his niche in San Francisco, but now he wanted to travel somewhere else, to a place he could call his own. I liked that. I liked his drive.

He said he had bought a place in Chicago and asked me whether I wanted to go with him. I didn’t know what Chicago meant, but what did I care? Could be any place. I didn’t care to stay in San Francisco.

I went with him. I went with him in all possible ways.

Chicago did shock me. It is cold, colder than home in any season. And in the winters it’s dark, and freezing. The lake sends wind and snow our way. Always. Always.

Contrary to San Francisco, there aren’t many Chinese in Chicago. Ma Shu set up his place, a speakeasy, he called it. A place where people can drink (which is forbidden by law, crazy as it sounds) and dance to jazz. All night long, if they wish.

I love jazz. Why? I don’t know. It doesn’t sound like anything familiar to me, still when I listen to it and especially when I dance to it, it’s like a part of me is set free. Free, like I’ve never been. So free sometimes I’m scared by that feeling, but never so much not to go back to it every time.

Ma Shu has never be opposed to my dancing. I’ve even joined the show. I dance with other dancers, dance with customers. Ma Shu let me do anything American women do. I can drink, if I want. I can smoke. I can wear shockingly short dresses. He’s never tried to stop me from doing anything. He’s taught me to speak English. He’s taught me to deal with Americans. He’s given me a gorgeous house, beautiful dresses, anything I want.

I owe him so much. I owe him everything.

And now… now I don’t know what to do.

Magic of Solstice Tour Featuring C.B. MacGillavry

Welcome to the 11th day of the Magic of Solstice Fantasy Writers' Tour 2015!

250x250 ButtonIf you haven't done so already, you can follow the tour on Facebook. Tomorrow's hosts are Nichole Giles and Cheri Schmidt. I'll also be sharing an interview with my character, Kado, from my Shadow Stalker Serial. Today I've got C.B. MacGillavry with me and she has shared a guest post written by one of her characters, Twang, and some other little tidbits!
C.B. Mac Gillavry studied English and Dutch literature, she has an affinity for Colonial Dutch literature. C.B., like so many authors, started writing as soon as she was able to write, although the actual reading started at a later stadium, with the discovery of Jane Austen. She enjoys many different genres and writers, preferably in the original language. The environment is a key topic in her writings and she ideally writes for young adults, in the hope of enchanting them, even if just for a short while.

The Eco fantasy series Domus Dianae for young adults is composed, so far, of novels and short stories revolving around a group of characters of various nature and backgrounds.

About Supermoon

The first short novel’s main character is a girl of seventeen, Victoria Springer, who finds herself endangered by three people. Their goal is to pollute the Lake Garda and kill the girl. She finds out that she has magical powers she was destined to have, thanks to the aid of people and fantastic creatures who live in and around a highly magical place. From very shy and reluctant, she grows to accept a more active role in the story. She also learns about dragons and fairies, gnomes and magic, and at the end of the novel she finds love.

About Here be Dragons! A Michaelmas Tale

The first short story picks up where the novel has left, with the main character struggling to accept her new relationship and finding out more about the boy she loves. She is taught about certain mechanics in the magical world and has to fight against poachers in order to save the life of a group of nymphs and the dragons from exposure.

maddy steampunkAbout The lights of Saint John: A Fairy’s Tale

The second short story is a fairy tale, the main character is Agatha the fairy, who has to overcome her past issues with long lost lovers and grow towards another more suitable partner, a nature spirit she encounters on a quest. She has to help him find the golden cloth, in order to save nature from the greed of men. She fight against her last lover, which is also a metaphor for her fighting against all the wrong he has done to her.
Domus Dianae is the magical place on the shores of the Lake Garda, Italy, around which the series revolves. There is an ecological theme waving through every individual story, together with a quote from Shakespeare and a song setting the tone of the  individual tales. The fantasy element also brushes against both real historical events and Greek mythology, as the place chosen for the tales has historically been home to a Greek colony and further inhabited throughout history.
The series will include at least two more short stories and a longer novel (work in progress), mostly set in Indonesia.

TwangAnd now for a guest post by Twang:

Hello, my real name is Alexandra Drerae Ramsey, but my friends call me Twang, because that’s the sound the arrow makes, whenever I shoot with my crossbow. I’m very good at shooting with the crossbow, by the way.
I live in a castle in Schotland, it’s an ancient mansion and it was built by my ancestors, in order to protect the Loch nearby. We are part of the Protection Group of the Loch, we look after the eco system, the plants, the animals, pretty much everything that has to do with Nature. The Loch is one of the Sources of Magic, so what we really protect is the Magic.
The caslte I live in is divided in four apartments: one is for me; one is where my fiancĂ© Steve lives and he’s the Protector of the Source. Gabe is our healer and herbalist, and he lives in the third apartment. The last one is empty right now, but you always need a place for Grandma, right?
My primary task in the group is to train the dragons. Yes, I know, a girl looking after dragons sounds very cool. And it is! I breed a very special kind of dragons, they are taller than the ones on the Continent, they are almost regal and very intelligent. Little George is my youngest one, he was born around Christmas and he’s a bit naughty but he’s also very cute. I love him very much…
Steve is the love of my life, I’m glad I found him and he’s glad he found me. He’s a very talented Protector, very good at doing magic, but that might be because he’s a vampire. When I tell people that he’s a vampire, they often ask me if he sparkles or if he’s tried to eat me.
Well of course he has never tried toe at me, otherwise I would have dumped him a long time ago! And no, he doesn’t sparkle when exposed to daylight. He does have a very sensitive skin though, so he really needs good sunblock when we go to Italy, to visit our friends there. You see, our Source is not the only one in the world and we keep in touch with the other Groups. It’s good to have other people to share your experiences and thoughts with.
Last year we lost one of the Sources and that Group had to leave. Their Protector, Joe, dropped by before going to the Continent. We really enjoyed having him over, we took him to the feast in the village, when we celebrated Saint George. That’s always fun, because the people in the village think that my punch is the reason the see dragons around the place!
Oh, I nearly forgot to tell you about my hobbies: I ride my horse bareback, as I said I shoot with the crossbow but also with pretty much anything that shoots, I bake very well and I weld too. I know, it’s an odd combination, but the welding often comes in handy when I sew my dresses: they call my style steampunk…
I hope you liked this little introduction to my world. In case you want to know more about my dragons, here’s a scene from a short story I’m in, even if I’m not the protagonist of this one in particular. Enjoy the dragon!
"O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright.
It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night
Like a rich jewel in an Ethiop's ear."

The Lights of Saint John: A Fairy’s Tale

Once upon a time, there lived a small, golden fairy who went by the name of Agatha. She lived among many other magical creatures, on the shores of the great blue lake, in an enchanted valley that carried the name of Valtenesi, Valley of the Athenians.
The little fairy had long straight blond hair and was known for her sweet smile that reflected her kind nature. She was able to fly thanks to transparent golden wings that looked far to big for her. They were adorned with very delicate and almost watermarked patterns.
Agatha was the one who was in charge of breeding and training the fireflies that embellished the fields on hot summer nights. Whilst she was preparing for the summer to come, for the feast of Saint John, she stopped at the house of her friend. Susanna was the human who lived in the Domus Dianae, the most magical place on the western shore of the Lake Garda.
It was a bright and shiny morning when Agatha flew into the enchanted garden, the sun shone golden in the light blue sky…
‘Georgie! Come back here. You’ll burn down all the trees…’
Twang ran after the electric blue dragon, while Susanna rushed to and fro with pans of water to put out the little fires. All the while she kept repeating the word no, like a never ending mantra, under her breath.
‘What’s going on?’ Victoria asked.
‘Little George is being a bit naughty. He was supposed to lit a small fire, but the thing got out of hand…’ Susanna yelled over her shoulder.
Victoria and Joe looked at the scene holding hands. They both sighed at once. The girl looked up to her boyfriend and asked,
‘Do you think I should do something?’
He turned his head to her, then to the scene and back to her again. He nodded,‘I’m afraid so.’
Victoria sighed and placed her hands against an imaginary wall. She closed her eyes, muttered a few words and big splashes water fell out of the sky right above the little fires. One after the other, the flames dimmed and turned into thin gray smoke plumes that snaked up to the sky.
‘Well done!’ Joe cheered.
Susanna sagged to the ground and the chanting stopped at once as well.
‘Come here, you little devil!’ said Twang brightly, when she took advantage of the little dragon’s surprise. He only looked up at the sky where the water had suddenly come from.
‘I guess this’ll do for the moment.’ Victoria added dryly.
The little fairy whizzed into the garden and called merrily to the others, ‘Having a bit of a problem with the pup?’
Twang took the dragon by the collar and pulled him gently towards the house. ‘I suppose… He’s lovely when he wants to be. He is an adolescent right now, so I have to work hard to make him behave. Dragons should be treated with a gentle hand, otherwise they might turn aggressive.’
Agatha smiled broadly. Susanna got up and slowly regained her composure. She turned to the fairy and said, ‘Hello dear Agatha, what brings you here?’
‘Oh, I’m on my way to the grass fields. I still have to pick the spot.’
‘You seem cheerful.’ Noted the woman.
‘I am! For the first time in a very long time, I am… and I want to keep it this way. I can’t wait to show you how well the Lights are doing.’
She rose in the sky again, waved at the others, and shot away laughing, enveloped in her golden light.

About Journey to Aviad

Threatening clouds and fierce storms besiege the city of Tyroc. More frequent and powerful than ordinary storms, young Elowyn, a weaver’s daughter living in the outskirts of the city, senses something disturbing and unnatural about them. She soon realizes that the storms are but a warning sign of much more frightening things yet to come.
Terrifying wolf-like creatures emerge from the depths of the wilderness at the bidding of a dark master. His name found only among the crumbling pages of ancient texts, the re-appearance of Alazoth and his Hounds is a dark omen for the people of Tyroc and beyond. Only legends remain of the heroes and prophets whose blood was shed ages ago to banish him into the abyss, which should have remained his prison for all time. How he has been released is a mystery, but all the old stories agree that death and destruction are sure to follow.
New JTA CoverWith the Hounds inching closer each day, the city of Tyroc caught up in religious and political turmoil, and her home life no less turbulent, Elowyn has nothing left to rely on but her meager courage and a budding faith in Aviad, the Creator. She and her sister, Morganne, set out on a remarkable journey that challenges everything they have ever known about themselves, the world, and the path that Aviad has laid out for them.

Now for a guest post from Gareth, a character from the Journey to Aviad.

Well, that’s it.  My satchel is packed with all of my worldly possessions, which don’t amount to much, I’m afraid.  A book of prayers, a medallion with the symbol of my order stamped upon it, a blank scroll, quill, and ink.  I gave the last of my coins for a new robe, which should keep me warm and dry for my journey.  There are other monks and priests who think that poverty vows are antiquated and unnecessary.  But I have always taken mine seriously…along with a good many other things.  Like Aviad, and the Tomes of Wisdom, and the writings of the Prophets.  I suppose that is why I’m in such trouble now—why I’m being forced out of the Temple.
I am in good company though.  My mentor, and a small group of others, have also been asked…no, forced…to disappear.  They say our beliefs are dangerous.  But we say to not believe in Aviad’s word is more dangerous yet.  The old prophecies are coming true before right our eyes, only the leadership has been blinded by its own desires.  It either cannot see, or does not want to.  So we are set to leave ere the sun rises.  But I do not go with any bitterness, or fear.  This will be my first adventure into the very real world beyond these cloistered halls, and with Aviad as my guide, I am ready for it.
My only regret is that I must leave my students behind.  I can only wonder at what they will be taught in our absence.  Two in particular I am sad to part ways with; common girls named Morganne and Elowyn.  Their mother wanted them taught to read and write—a service I was only too happy to provide.  I found Morganne in particular to be a ready pupil, not only of her letters, but of the deeper lessons found within the Tomes.  The Spirit is strong within her, and I sense that she is meant for more than a common life.  Aviad placed it on my heart to give her the primer I received as a boy entering the Temple.  I can only hope that it will continue to teach her in my stead, and that in these dark days, she and Elowyn will find peace within its worn pages.
I can hear my companions coming down the hall, which means it is finally time to leave.  We shall make our way west, to join an order of like mind and purpose.  Perhaps there we can yet do some good and learn more about these changes that are happening in the world.  Whether Morganne, Elowyn and I cross paths again or not, we make the same journey of faith, in this life and to the one beyond.
