Where were you born, and what was it like growing up there?
I was born Kent, England. Growing up wasn't good. My father was a bully and an abuser.
Do you have a close relationship with your family?
I'll never willingly speak to my father again. He threatened my mom with a knife so I brained him with the frying pan dragged mom to a women's refuge. I was twelve at the time. Mom and I are close. I still phone her every day.
What is the happiest memory from your childhood?
Moving to York in the north of England. It meant I wouldn't run into dad in the street.
Who was your best friend growing up?
I didn't have one. How could I invite friends home when my dad might hit me, or worse, them?
If you could compare yourself to someone from another novel, who would it be?
Katniss Everdean from the Hunger games. We're both survivors who do what's need to move on. I protected my mom. That's not the same as protecting thirteen districts, but it was enough for me. Of course, she wanted to look out for her little sister. I'm an only child. Unlike Katniss, my fiercest weapon's my tongue. I use it to keep people at bay.
Who is your enemy?
Cousin Rolf. He's Blaxton's cousin not mine, but he's a monster with delusions of grandeur. He wants to rule the world, and he thought I'd help him. What he didn't know is that vampire compulsion doesn't work on me.
Who do you most admire in your world?
Easy. My Blaxton. He was known as Blaxton the Bold in the twelfth century. Then Rolfe the Rat tricked him out of his soul. He killed Blaxton when they were on crusade, but Blaxton didn't stay dead. Without his soul he rose as a vampire. He spent eight hundred years alone. How terrible is that. He tells me his emotions faded and he felt nothing, until he met me.
Tell us a little about your world, and where you fit in?
I applied for the job as archivist at Whitborough Castle and got it. No one else applied, you see. The last two archivists had disappeared in mysterious circumstance. I always had the someone's watching me feeling when I worked in my office. I was right, of course.
What is the most important lesson you've learned about life?
Always chase your dreams. I did, and I couldn't be happier.
What is the strangest situation you've ever found yourself in?
In a castle surrounded by vampires. As a human, I didn't believe they existed. Terr-i-fying. One of them held a knife to my throat and tried to compel me to obey him. Instead, I bit him and broke free. See, me in castle full of vampires, and I was the one doing the biting.
What is your favorite food?
Pasta. Not that I eat it too often. A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips, right?
Name some of your bad habits.
I have a snarky mouth and give people attitude. I turned Cousin Rolfe apoplectic when he imprisoned me in that cage.
