The Heart Collector-Auckland Steampunk#1: A #Romance #Suspense Novel by Barbara Russell

I’m an entomologist and a soil biologist, which is a fancy way to say that I dig in the dirt, looking for bugs. I was a kid when I read The Lord Of The Rings and fell in love with fantasy novels.

When I discovered cosy mystery, I fell in love with Hercules Poirot and Sherlock Holmes. Then I grew up and . . . Nah, I’m joking. Don’t grow up, folks! It’s a trap.

About the Book

Auckland, 1884. The Supernaturals are frightened. Despite being able to do extraordinary things like teleporting or lighting a fire with a stare, a serial killer, the Heart Collector, is slaughtering them. He rips their chests open and removes their hearts.

While other aristocratic, nineteen-year-old girls spend time dancing, Isabel trains hard to become an MI7 agent—Military Intelligence Seventh Division, a crime squad run by Supernaturals. The Heart Collector murdered her best friend, and enrolling at MI7 is the best way to help catch the killer.

Isabel senses other people’s feelings as if they were her owns. But MI7’s leader is too worried about Isabel’s safety to let her join the team.

Eager to prove that her power is valuable, Isabel volunteers to meet Murk, a dangerous Supernatural man who can turn himself invisible. MI7 desperately tried to recruit him and failed.

She believes that her power is enough to convince Murk to become an MI7’s agent and help apprehend the Heart Collector. If he wants to attack her, his feelings will broadcast his intention, and she’ll be ready.

What Isabel isn’t ready for is to fall in love with the man who will collect her heart.

Growing up in Grafton, Illinois, situated between the Mississippi River and the limestone bluffs carved from it eons ago, the legend of the Piasa Bird is well known. There is even a rendering of the Native American bird on a bluff wall on the National Scenic Byway (or as we like to call it, the River Road).

The "Piasa" is a birdlike monster as large as a calf, with horns like a deer, red eyes, a human face, the body covered with green, red and black scales, and a tail so long it passed around the body. The creature was given its name by the Illini Indians, "The Piasa", a bird that devours men.

Well, I thought about legends, and how some have a basis of truth or religious belief attached to their stories. That got me to thinking about all the bedtime stories, campfire recollections, and folklore of the area, including the Piasa Bird. Now, wouldn’t it be cool if there really was some truth to the shifter tales we read about? So, I picked one area, Native American legends, and focused on that for my research.

I learned about power animals or “spirit guides” that many tribes believe come to them in dreams, especially on vision quests. They take many forms and appear for different reasons, but for purposes of my paranormal books, I decided to focus on the legends that have survived the test of time. The Hopi Tribe calls these special guardians, “Catori,” their name for spirit. That is the reasoning behind naming my first paranormal book, Legends: Catori.

I focused on the Great Horned Owl as my first paranormal book, rather than the Piasa Bird, because of the varying tales throughout the Native American Tribes. Some see the owl as a harbinger of death, due to its nocturnal habits; however, others see it as an indication of wisdom or a foreshadowing of the future. So, to get a deeper understanding of the folklore and because I’m a firm believer that there is so much more than what can be seen with the eye, I called upon the wisdom of the Great Horned Owl to be my first legend in the anticipation that it will herald a future of entertaining and enlightening paranormal romances for everyone to enjoy. Hopefully, the tale of death won’t mean the demise of my career!

About the Book

An ancient text has corrupted the mind of King Ninus, Babylon 3000 BC. At the peak of his rulership there is one power he desires above all else, but it is not in his control, and his symbol of conquest (tower of Babel) lies incomplete.

A man has been seriously injured and is without any memory of who he is. The woman, who finds him, saves his life and hides him from the king until he has fully recovered and can start to retrace his steps. But as Rihat’s memory starts to release his name and fragments of his life, he becomes once again embroiled in the past, thereby putting her in great danger. Because like him, she is compromised by a destiny beyond her own will, and like him, she is not free to follow the calling of her own heart.

When he eventually re-lives the agony of who he is and why he has become that way, he is forced into choices that will affect both past and future.

It was past midnight when the sound of a horse’s hooves in the small outdoor patio woke her. It was highly unusual for anyone to visit at this hour of night, but she needed to know who had arrived, so she got out of bed and lit one of her oil lanterns. Before she had time to reach the door, however, there was a thump as though a sack of grain had been dropped off outside, and she decided to look out of the window first. She could only make out the tail and back of a horse, which seemed riderless, so she called out for the person to identify himself. There was no reply.

Carefully she opened the door and looked outside. She lifted her oil lantern and nearly dropped it when she saw a man lying on the ground in a pool of blood, which was quickly spreading. She started to shake and lifted the lantern higher to see the horse. It was a beautifully kept, strong-looking, grey stallion, but its eyes were rolling to the back of its head, it was frothing from the mouth, and it, too, was covered with blood.

She could not tell if the horse was injured or not, as there was only a thick, red streak on the horse’s side, where the rider had slid off and fallen to the ground. She stood frozen with panic, and her first impulse was to call out for help. Instead, she put her hand over her mouth to muffle all sounds, as she did not know where the attacker was. She had seen wounds and blood before, but this was the first time she faced it on her own. She knew she had to do something.

Penelope had been greeted by several people, and engaged in brief conversation before continuing to roam. Half the tables had already filled, and within the hour, the Symphony’s director, as well as the conductor would be making speeches before the merriment really got underway.

As she began walking toward the window, she continued to scan the room, admiring the women in their beautiful gowns along with their gentlemen partners in their handsome tuxedos and suits. Quiet conversation filtered around her as the melody of “Silent Night”, composed by Austrian Franz Xaver Gruber, added to the festive feeling.

After circling the tree, she stopped in front of the window to admire the snow blanketing the outside, the expanse of white gleaming under ambient light. Penelope then focused on watching the gathering behind her through the reflection of the glass, as if viewing it from another dimension. Patrons lingered, sipping from their flutes of champagne, while others flitted from group to group, making introductions and adding to the conversations.

As she continued to observe, movement caught her eye, and there stood Sebastian, encased in his tuxedo. He looks dashing! She chuckled to herself at her thoughts. And although with the distance she couldn’t see his eyes, she knew they were a light green and were no doubt sparkling. At least they had last night. Dark brown hair waved casually about, giving him a rakish look, as opposed to most of the gentlemen present with styled hair, slicked with gel.

As Sebastian greeted those who approached him, he smiled broadly with his full lips, making his matching dimples appear below his cheeks. The small cleft in his chin was somehow an enticing feature on his smooth face.

Penelope felt herself smiling just watching him, both eager and nervous for him to be near. He continued to slowly make his way throughout the room, and when he came within ten feet of the tree, he looked up, his gaze colliding with hers. She was dazzled by his smile as it grew even wider the longer he stared. She couldn’t help but blush and duck her head, and when she looked back up, he stood right in front of her. Her quick inhale preceded a gasp, and he was quick to apologize for apparently startling her.

“I’m sorry, Penelope, I didn’t mean to startle you. Are you here alone?”

“I am. Father wasn’t feeling up to attending, but insisted I come and enjoy myself.”

“And are you? Enjoying yourself?” She was certain his smile was one of mischief.

“I am now,” she stated boldly. She quickly cleared her throat and rushed on after seeing his brow inch up. “Don’t you think the ballroom looks magnificent? I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything so stunning.”

Sebastian looked around as if taking in the surroundings for the first time. “Yes, the decorators have certainly done well.” When his gaze landed back on her, his intense look sent shivers across her skin. “But nothing compares to the stunning vision in front of me.”

About the Book

Would you risk everything to protect the one you love from relentless greed?

After the death of her mother, Charity Bohdan vowed to carry on her work—providing free treatment to those who are sick or injured. What started off as patching up wounds soon took a very different direction when she was being called to treat young women who'd been brutally raped and left pregnant. She knows the risks involved with treating and re-homing these women, but she can't turn them away.

When Charity is called to treat a drunk's wounded hand, she expects to find some elderly station hand. Instead, she finds a handsome, young man, who isn't drunk at all. As she tends to his injury, she can't ignore the feelings he stirs inside her when their skin touches.

Avarice Licciardi has spent his life working for his father—a greedy, loveless man who has destroyed everyone in his way. But when Avarice meets Charity, a woman with the touch of an angel, he discovers there's something he craves much more than his father's money. He wants this woman to be a part of his life.

As they spend time together, talking of Irish legends and going on picnics, Avarice begins to win the beautiful woman's heart. But then his father orders him to retrieve some hidden papers at Charity's estate. He refuses…until his father threatens to go get the papers himself. Avarice is determined to protect Charity from this brutal man—even if that means deceiving her.

What Avarice finds at her estate is a hidden tunnel with incriminating mysteries far greater than hidden papers. Together Avarice and Charity uncover secrets from the past that sicken their souls as an evil, greedy man threatens to tear them apart in his search for the evidence hidden at the Bohdan estate.

Why did you decide to be a writer?

I love telling stories and my parents always encouraged me to write them down so I didn't forget them. Eventually, those stories became longer and longer.

Where are you from?

I'm from a small sugarcane farming town in North Queensland, Australia that has a very limited writing community.

What genres do you write?

Australian Historical Romantic Suspense

How often do you write?

I try every day but as my husband is a shift worker and I have 5 young children at school this doesn't always happen. I write what I can when I can.

Does your family support you in your writing, or are you on your own?

My family is very supportive in so many ways from web designing, to plot ideas to just listening to me ramble.

Have you ever had a particularly harsh critique?

I think we all eventually get a harsh critique. It goes with the job. First time it happened it was like a knife in the heart, but now I just get up and go outside and walk around the garden for a bit to clear the mind.

What is the best writing advice you've ever received?

That a bad first draft is better than a blank page.

Are you a pantser or outliner?

I usually start outlining but then the story just takes itself wherever it's meant to go.

Do you write about real life experiences, or does everything come from your imagination?

A lot of my own family history goes into my books, but then I elaborate it for the story.

What was the hardest part about writing your latest book?

Given the theme of the series I'm currently working on, I have it harder than usual knowing that I have to stick to a certain subject line.

About the Book

“Lady, if I were you, I’d get the hell away from here ‘cause when I make it up this hill, I’m gonna be looking for you.”

Lucky Coalson’s luck has run out. His ex-wife turned out to be a con artist; his business is in a shambles, and he’s been tossed into a muddy river by a smart assed feminist with a chip on her shoulder. Things couldn’t get much worse…or so he thought.
When Lucky’s accused of murdering his ex-wife, the Coalson family enlists the help of a private investigator to gather the clues necessary to prove his innocence. Little did they know that Renee Morgan is the same woman that sent Lucky scrambling up a sodden river bank at the height of a storm.

The two square off immediately, but Renee’s admiration of the Coalson family, despite her dislike of Lucky, is the deciding factor in her acceptance of the job. And although Lucky bristles every time she speaks, he grudgingly respects her intelligence and savvy skills as a private investigator.

As the hunt for the killer escalates, the two find they are not the only ones looking for the mysterious assassin. And the other people are more than willing to take out anyone that gets in their way, including those that Lucky and Renee hold dear to their hearts.
In a moment of passion that rocks them to the core, they realize their love may be forged in fire, but both have been badly burned by past lovers, and too stubborn to admit the truth. Can they find a way around their fears, or will Lucky’s ex-wife continue to plague him from the grave?

Keep reading for an interview with the author:

What genres do you write?

I have written just about everything from sweet romance to horror, but I love to write contemporary romance with an edge. By that, I mean twists of comedy, suspense, erotica, paranormal, or issues of relevance in today's society. Most of my work is a combination of many of the above, but I guess romantic comedy is my favorite to write because it flows easily for me. I'm a walking, talking "I Love Lucy" sitcom according to my husband!

Is there a genre that you've been wanting to experiment with?

I'm starting a paranormal spinoff series to my popular Tempered Steel Series which is also set in Grafton, Illinois. The Plains Indians were prevalent in the area, and many legends have evolved surrounding the animals and spirits in near the Mississippi River. My Legends series will delve into that.

What is the quirkiest thing you've ever done while writing?

I make my family play out the scenes in the living room so I can figure out the dynamics of the what ifs. My daughter has been "shot", son has been "stabbed", and my husband has careened around both of them as a gun-toting assassin on a motorcycle. They are so supportive, they take it all in stride.

What authors have most influenced you?

Oh, so many! I first fell in love with historical romance thanks to Kathleen Woodiwiss and her "Flame and the Flower" is still one of my favorites; my friend introduced me to Amanda Quick's work and the fact that she can write a story from a historical setting, then continue the thread into contemporary and futuristic, is amazing! My favorite authors now are Lexi Blake and Shayla Black, both fabulous writers and very nice women.

What are your goals as an author?

I would like to make a consistent living as an author. I think I can get there. I'm not really into titles as such, so the whole NY Times Best-Seller isn't really a goal, but if folks know who I am because a friend or colleague recommended my book...well that is worth so much more to me! That's where I'd like to be in five years.

What is the best compliment you've ever received as an author?

A young woman wrote to me that my series helped her during her chemotherapy treatments. Whenever she felt she couldn't keep her optimism up, or the pain was intense, she would reread on of my books, whichever she felt was appropriate to the situation she was feeling. I was so amazed and humbled by that. As an author, you hope to bring in your readers, but that letter took me to a whole other level of pride and compassion for those that love my books.

I was so touched, I sent her the entire series in paperback.

Have you ever had a particularly harsh critique?

Yes. I had a woman trash Whistlin' Dixie for it's "sugary sweet homespun silliness". She also made critical comments about me as an author and the "rather unintelligent people that read this sort of stuff." I was incensed on behalf of my fans. It's one thing not to like the book - okay, I can handle that; I can even handle a personal attack, but my fans? NO WAY!!! So I politely wrote to the blog where the review was printed, and asked that they remove the part about my fans. They were apologetic and removed the entire post. I was satisfied with that.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, and you could only have five books with you, what would they be?

  • The Bible - every time I read it, I get something new
  • The works by Alexander Dumas - his adventures are legendary and include all the points I love to read.
  • The Joy of Cooking - because I need to know how to cook fish.
  • The Boy Scouts Handbook - because I have no idea how to survive anywhere!
  • Whistlin' Dixie - because it all started here and I can continue it in my head!

What book or series do you enjoy reading over and over again?

The Masters of Menage by Lexi Blake and Shayla Black

How many books do you have on your "to read" list?

I have too many!!! That's the thing about being an author. You have to write, so no time to read! I need to read The last four new books by Lexi Blake in her Masters and Mercenaries series; Amanda Quick/Jayne Ann Krentz' stuff for the last three years; and so many indie authors I can't even begin!

Do you prefer ebooks, print or both?

I love print, especially hardback. The feel of it in your hands, the smell of the pages, I know I'm weird! But, my love of books started early, so I just can't help it!

What made you decide to self-publish?

lol 177 rejections from traditional publishers! They were kind but most said they didn't know where to put me as my books aren't just romance - they have more.

Do you write about real life experiences, or does everything come from your imagination?

Actually, my Tempered Steel Series is based on the flood of Grafton, Il, in 1993. My relatives lived there and we had just moved from there. It was devastating, and the clean up was tough, but the folks there were determined to rebuild the village and make it bigger and better than ever. And they did. I had to write about it, and, of course, give it a romantic twist because I'm a hopeless romantic!

Do you ever base your characters on people you know?

The Tempered Steel Series is based on my husband and his brothers! I took one good trait and one not-so-good trait from each of them and put it into the characters of the brothers in the series. To this day, they argue over which character they are!

What are you working on now?

I'm writing a humorous fiction novel for women based on a 40 something divorcee', who has spent her life in that "mom/wife" bubble and has no idea how to go about finding work, romance, and friends in this new tech society. It's called, "Minx", and should be out late 2018.

What inspired your current work?

A conversation of "what-ifs" with my husband. After being married for over 30 years, it's inconceivable to not have my partner. We got into this conversation because we were talking about retirement and my imagination took over.

Do you have anything specific you'd like to say to your readers?

Thank for from the bottom of my heart. When I feel doubtful of my work, you are there to cheer me on; when I need help getting the word out, I know I can count on your support; when I release each new book, you are there to share in my happiness. I couldn't do this without you. You made Me believe!

Fixtures & Fittings: A #Romance Novel by Julia Blake

I was born and raised in the lovely, historic, market town of Bury St Edmunds, where I live still with my daughter, one crazy cat, and a succession of even crazier lodgers. I'm typical Cancer, in that although I like to visit new places and see new things, I'm always very pleased to get home again.

My loves are writing and reading (obviously), but I also enjoy cooking, spending time with friends and, when I have the time, decoupaging.

This past year has been the busiest of my life, with the release of three novels, one eBook novella and a collection of short stories and poems, and it’s been wonderful seeing my stories comes to life, knowing that people are loving my characters as much as I do.

Where were you born, and what was it like growing up there?

I was born on an inner city council estate in London. It was pretty rough, I never really fitted in, I always wanted more from life.

Do you have a close relationship with your family?

My father left when I was 13 and my mother couldn't cope, so I ended up in care. I haven't seen or spoken to either of them since. But I have my children, they are my family now. Zoey, my eldest is 15. An amazing person, despite the circumstances of her birth, she is a child who was meant to be on this earth. And then there are my boys, Finley and Connor, twins, they're now ten years old.

Tell us a little about your world, and where you fit in?

My world is one of struggling to get by and self-sufficiency. We live in a huge rambling house, that simply eats money. That is why it's up for sale, why I have this man, Marcus Blackwood, coming to view it this afternoon. I don't want to leave here, none of us do, but, I can't afford it anymore. Despite growing most of our food in our large garden and on our allotment, and watching every penny, we simply can't afford to live here anymore.

What are your goals?

I don't really have any goals for myself. It's my children my ambitions are for now. Zoey has a brilliant future ahead of her, I think she can become whatever she wants to be, but she's leaning towards working with children with special needs. The boys? Well, it's a little too early to tell, but Connor is an extremely talented artist, so, you never know.

What is your greatest fear?

That I won't be able to care for my children anymore, that something will happen to me and they'll be on their own. There's no one else, you see, just me. I've tried to teach them how to rely on themselves and on each other. I know Zoey would always look after the others, but, she's only fifteen, still a child herself really.

What is the most important lesson you've learned about life?

Never give up.

What is the greatest obstacle you have ever had to face?

Being pregnant and alone at sixteen. Not how I saw my life going, but, from the moment I felt her move under my heart, I know this was my baby and that I loved her more than the world itself, and that I was going to keep her, no matter what.

Do you have a secret you've never told anyone?

I'm afraid. Most of the time, there's this fear, that the life we live is so precarious, so fragile, it can change or even end in a heartbeat, and that scares me.

Have you ever been in love?

There was Daniel. Amazing, wonderful Daniel. Zoey and I went to an all-day Summer folk festival and he was one of the acts. Zoey was only a toddler, but she sang along to his song, waving daisies at him. After the show, he came to find us. It was love immediately. We were together for several years, until we weren't. I will never forget that day, sitting on our bed in my wedding dress, waiting to go and be married to my Daniel. When the police knocked on the door, I thought he'd forgotten his keys, but they'd come to tell me he was... I really can't talk about this anymore. It was a very long time ago, and I've cried all my tears now, and anyway, soon after I found out I was pregnant with the boys, so I had to cope, for their sake.

What kind of clothing do you prefer to wear?

I guess maybe people would describe me as a hippy. There's never any money left over for me, you see, it's all for the kids, so I tend to wear long, tie-dyed skirts and dresses, unless I'm working in the garden or on the allotment, then I have a variety of old trousers I got from the Army & Navy store. They're practical and hard-wearing, there's no point me having fancy clothes.

What is your favorite food?

The man who owns the allotment next to mine has a goat, and I barter fresh fruit and veg for goats cheese and butter. The goat's cheese is the best I've ever had, salty and tangy, it's so good on my homemade bread you could make a meal just of that, in fact, I have on more than one occasion. Then there are the tomatoes and summer fruits from our garden, so fresh and ripe, picked and eaten straight away. And old Mr. Branson, two doors down, I also barter my produce with him for his homemade wine. Admittedly, some of it's an acquired taste, but, it's better than nothing, and his damson wine is actually really nice.

What do you own that would be hardest to part with?

Our home. We love it. It defines who we are. It's ripping our hearts out that we have to leave, but, we have no choice.

What do you regret most in your life?

That Daniel never got to meet the boys, these amazing characters that we created from our love. He would have been a great dad, he was a great dad with Zoey, and I regret the waste and that my boys grew up fatherless.

What is your greatest virtue?

I'm hard-working, and I never give up or give in. I look after my family solely by myself and have raised three spectacular children, who are strong, fearless and kind.

If you had one day left to live, what would you do with your last day?

Spend it with my family, in our home, in our garden. Just do all the normal things we enjoy so much. Oh, and maybe crack open a bottle of Mr. Branson's elderflower champagne - maybe even two.

As I walked down the busy streets of New York City headed to my new job, a man walking towards me caught my eye. He was very handsome and I couldn’t stop looking at him—and in New York, that's saying something. He was over 6 feet tall, and even though he was wearing a suit I could see that he was extremely well formed. Very nice, I thought. He had dark wavy hair, and the color of his eyes rivaled the crisp blue of the sky. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t turn myself away; I just kept staring at him. Oh my, I thought to myself. Just Beautiful! Why does it seem like I’ve seen those eyes before? Maybe in a dream? Hmm. As I got closer to him, he looked my way. I stiffened with the thought of being caught staring. For a moment, I thought he might be looking past me, but as we got closer our eyes locked. My body warmed. I was hypnotized by him. I felt like I was somewhere else, floating in a cloud. In that moment, it felt like he and I were the only people that existed. The energy between us was invigorating.

I shook my head and tried to look away. Get it together, Isabella. As much as I tried, I still couldn’t turn my head away. Right at that moment, I tripped. It was an out of body experience, and I could see myself as I went airborne over the sidewalk and landed on my arms. When I landed, two thoughts crossed my mind: Ouch that hurt! and Oh, how embarrassing! I hoped he hadn’t seen that. I quickly looked up and saw that he had, then lowered my head back down in embarrassment.

A Passionate Play by Jessica Lauryn

A life-long lover of romance, Jessica took several writing classes in college, and told her professors she was one-day going to write soap-operas. When graduation came, she joined a critique group, and on a whim, decided to “write a romance novel.”

Then, on a train ride to her internship in the fashion industry, Jessica finally cracked open her very first romance novel. That hot August morning, she fell head-over-heels for the genre, and has been writing it ever since.

Jessica is an author for BookStrand, the “sweetest” imprint of publisher SirenBookStrand. She writes “Romantic Suspense,” which she describes as being heavier on the romance, and lighter on the suspense—just the way it should be!

Jessica is an active member of New Jersey Romance Writers where she has served on the executive board as the Put Your Heart in a Book Contest Chair, Special Events Chair and Hospitality/Critique Chair. She is also a member of the parent chapter, Romance Writers of America.

About the Book

On the heels of a major performance, theater actress Alicia Coleman is attacked in an alleyway. She is struck over the head with a pistol and the blow causes her to lose her memory. Injured and afraid, Alicia struggles to remember the details of her life. The only person who appears to know who she is, is the man she fears may also be her attacker.

In the midst of several failed attempts to escape, Alicia comes to know the man whose home she awoke in and realizes that the two of them share a complicated past. Though Nick refuses to tell her much beyond her first name, a series of dreams, in which she and he are sharing a lot more than the second story of a secluded mansion, cause Alicia to suspect the most outrageous of possibilities—that the man holding her prisoner may actually be her lover. Surrounding threats, including that of a midnight intruder, cause Alicia to realize that proving her theory true (or not) may be her only chance of keeping her attacker from coming after her a second time.

Nick wandered across the floor to the area behind the curio cabinet. There was a stereo there that Alicia hadn’t noticed before. He pressed a button, causing the room to fill with soft, romantic music.

Nick extended his hand once more as he came toward her. His smile was cool but also insistent and it contained a hint of danger. Dark brown eyes looked into hers, willing her to trust, to comply with her very mysterious and yet compelling desires.

Allowing herself to operate on pure instinct, Alicia slipped her hand into Nick’s. His warmth surrounded her and she felt a hint of anticipation as he urged her gently forward. Nick led her into the middle of the floor. Placing one large hand against her waist, he brought her beside his powerful, broad frame.

They began to move and Alicia swayed in unison with her partner as though they had danced together a thousand times before. In her mind, she was in the arms of a stranger, but her body reacted as though he was anything but, as though he were someone whom she knew intimately. Nick’s eyes, his scent, the very feel of him seemed familiar to her, and as his hand slid from her hip to the small of her back she realized that she ought to be telling him he was getting too close. Except she didn’t want him to back away—it felt good, being close to him like this.

As her partner drew her closer still, Alicia felt chills, yet at the same time she began to let go of the tension she was holding. She was encased in a blanket of heat, and as that blanket spun her around and brought her back against its softness she was taken into a realm of comfort and dreams. Dancing with her captor felt right to her and in a strange way, safe. Nick had gone out of his way to make her happy tonight and she got the feeling that wasn’t something he did every day. Letting her eyes fall closed, she inched beside him and when he didn’t resist she rested her head against the cushion of his shoulder.

Nick’s arms enveloped her, and Alicia became aware that he didn’t only smell of pinewood but of something darker, something she couldn’t quite define. She sensed a degree of rebelliousness in this man and for some strange reason the idea of that intrigued her. Strength seemed to emanate from every part of him and she wondered what it would be like to taste that strength. Filled with the strongest desire to do just that, she settled her hand against the back of his neck and tilted his head so that she could just about feel what she wanted to so desperately.

“Kiss me,” she insisted, lifting her chin.

Daniel came home late—later than he should have. Molly had already left for work. Before leaving, she’d fed the kids and sat them down in front of the TV. Normally, Daniel would have been home hours ago, but today he’d stopped for a beer, something he hadn’t done for months. Even though he knew she’d be mad at him, especially when he told her he’d been fired, he’d needed some time to himself.

Daniel suffered from schizoaffective mental disorder, and until recently had been taking his meds regularly. But a couple of months ago, he’d gone off them when he started to hear the voices, and began to self-medicate with alcohol. On a positive note, his sex drive had come back, and he’d even lost weight. Molly had liked that. But what she didn’t like were his mood swings—his highs and lows. Sometimes he could be mean, bordering on destructive.

He knew he should go back on his meds, but he felt that if he did, Molly would complain about their lack of a sex life and that he was getting fat again. There was, he felt, just no way of pleasing that woman.

That afternoon at work, he’d decked his boss for something he’d been asked to do and that he felt was personally demeaning. What did his boss think he was, his personal slave? Shortly after the incident, Ed had told him to leave, never to come back. Fine, he’d thought. He’d stomped out to his car, opened the trunk, and proceeded to smash the boss’s car with a tire iron he’d retrieved.

Following that, he’d stopped at a bar, and as soon as he got home, he went to the fridge in search of a beer. Usually, Molly would keep one or two in the fridge for herself, but tonight there were none.

“That does it!” he exclaimed. “The kids are going to bed right now and I’m going out.”

After putting the kids to bed, Daniel abruptly left the house, got into his old Ford sedan, and headed for the bar near Pinnacle Peak.

Chapter 2
The Accident

Today was David and Jocelyn’s thirtieth wedding anniversary. Their children, Diana and Char, had originally planned on giving their parents a huge party to celebrate the occasion. But those plans were cancelled when their parents had told them that they preferred to dine alone with each other that night, at the restaurant where they had first met.

The restaurant, rustic and just as western as Scottsdale had once been, was just a short drive from their house. Knowing that if David wore a tie the waiters would cut it off—which was the custom of the restaurant—they both dressed casually in their western wear. David wore his black denims, boots, shirt, and cowboy hat, while Jocelyn wore her black denims, boots, and frilly white western shirt. She’d always hated hats and never wore them. A good-looking couple in their early fifties, they’d always attracted attention when they went out. Tonight would be no exception.

David had once suffered from a drinking problem, but after nearly losing his family and his business to this addiction, he had since joined a support group. A successful recovering alcoholic, he was now a sponsor to several younger men who suffered from this same addiction. Tonight at dinner, he retained his usual sobriety. However, knowing Jocelyn would on occasion enjoy a glass of red wine with dinner, he offered to order a glass for her. She politely declined, saying that she preferred coffee instead. After dinner, as they walked across the parking lot to their car, they noticed it had begun to rain, something that seldom happened outside of the monsoon season.

“I don’t remember where we parked our car, and it’s dark tonight.”

“Very. It’s a new moon and raining on top of that. I’ll certainly be glad when we get back home.”

“Me too.”

Hearing a screech of brakes, David quickly looked to his side to see a dark car that had just pulled into the parking lot and was rapidly bearing down upon them. The driver of the car braked, but it was too late.

****

Daniel had pulled into the parking lot too fast and was unable to control his vehicle. It was dark, raining, and he couldn’t see clearly in his inebriated condition. He thought he saw two people ahead of him and he braked, but he skidded and felt the car hit something. Afraid to stop for fear of what he might have done, he raced out of the parking lot and sped back down the road the way he had come. He still wasn’t able to see well; the rain was coming down harder and his vision had grown more blurry. Thinking he knew where the shoulder was, he attempted to pull the car over, but the shoulder wasn’t there and his car went over and rolled down the hillside. Everything went black, and Daniel never woke up again.
